Block 46 – Mary of Bethany

traditional mary  This block involves curves and applique, two things I tend to avoid in my quilting.  You can find the templates for this version of the block in the Yahoo Groups (Women of the Bible Quilt) files. I simplified the design, but kept the alternating colors.

For this version, you will need 4 center squares (two of each color) cut at 2″.  Cut the small “logs”, 4 of each color, at 1-1/4″ by 2″. Cut the large logs, 4 of each color, at 1-1/4″ by 3-1/2″.

Begin by sewing a contrasting small log to a center square.  Repeat for the opposite side.  Make 4.image Continue by adding the large logs to opposite sides of the centers, to make a framed square.  Make 4 units.

Sew contrasting squares together, then finish by sewing the block in a four-patch.
